I have had a number of comments about gritting the roads in Bishopthorpe during this past spell of frosty weather. It is the policy of the Council to grit bus routes and certain roads around schools. Whilst it would certainly be preferred that all roads were gritted in the authority area, the cost of such an exercise would be huge, both in terms of the actual gritting and in buying and maintaining such a large amount of equipment that would be needed to carry out such gritting in the usual timescale.
I am not an apologist for the Council but one has to be realistic, such funding is not available, nor will it, I suspect be available in the near future. I realise that I appear to be negative, but sadly we must live in the real world, better that I report the facts rather than suggest otherwise.

There are salt bins about, but on Main Street the pavements have being very treacherous. Can the Council road sweeper, or the Parish Council take on the occasional task of at least making sure that the pavements around the shops are kept ice-free? I note that no shopkeepers or residents made the effort.
I notice MPD has commented that the Parish Council could take on the occasional task of keeping the pavements free of ice. Well we'd love to - and in our case it is not a funding issue! We have been trying for years to employ a lenghman to do non-routine tasks around the village on an ad hoc basis. Unfortunately although we are willing to pay we have had no takers. How about it MPD?

A lengthman (person) is a splendid idea. And given the economic situation there might be more chance of finding someone. A key thing would be how much pay for how many hours? Could the Parish advertise on the Bishopthorpe web site.
