Disabled Person's Railcard

If you:

1. Receive disability-related benefits, or

2. Are registered deaf or use a hearing aid, or

3. Are registered as visually impaired, or

4. Have epilepsy,

you are eligible to buy a Disabled Person's Railcard.

The Railcard allows you, and a person accompanying you, to a one-third discount on most rail fares in this country.

A Disabled  Person/s Railcard currently costs £20 for one year, or £54 for three years.

Similar discounts can be obtained in other ways by people with qualifying disabilities (e.g. by producing acceptable documentary proof of disability when booking and travelling). Check before travelling.

Most trains have wheelchair access, although space is limited and advance booking is needed.

Disability scooters can only be carried on certain types of train, so advance booking for these is essential.

At main stations such as York, staff can meet and assist people where needed (e.g. with luggage), by prior arrangement.

More information can be obtained from stations, or on www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk

York Strategic Traffic Plan

Questionnaires are being distributed in Bishopthorpe (as usual, only one per household) soliciting opinions about strategies for traffic planning in York.

Suggestions made are based on expectations of traffic growth. These assumptions are probably justified. At any rate, it is prudent to assume a worst case scenario and plan accordingly.

As usual, the questionnaire should be considered carefully. Radical changes suggested include road pricing and a tax on workplace parking. There is, as usual, a heavy bias in favour of the dangerous and minority activity of cycling!  There are suggestions with regard to the by-pass, and to Park & Ride.

It is very important that we complete and return these questionnaires. There is always a danger that the field is left open to those with vested interests (who always reply) whilst the typical citizen (whoever he or she is) can't be bothered to respond.

The results of surveys are used as evidence that a particular solution is what local people want. You have a chance to make sure that your opinion is heard.

Take a bus to .... Knaresborough Market

Knaresborough Market is held each Wednesday and is one of the best markets in the area.

See http://getdown.org.uk/bus for timetables.

York - Harrogate Express

Harrogate Travel (providers of our local 21 service) now run buses on the York-Harrogate route in addition to those run by Transdev.

Both companies observe the same route and stops except that Transdev buses take in Poppleton.

Tickets are not interchangeable between the two companies.

The companies publish separate timetable leaflets covering their own services only. The excellent local volunteer bus info. service on  http://getdown.org.uk/bus provides a comprehensive and printable timetable

Passengers from Bishopthorpe sometimes change buses at Blossom Street. They should be warned that there is a tendency for drivers from both companies to turn into Blossom St. from York Station in the outside lane, not noticing the occasional passenger waiting in front of the Convent. Watch out and wave vigorously!

Old bus passes are no longer valid

Are you still using an old City of York Bus Pass? If so, you should obtain a National Bus Pass from the Council Offices in Exhibition Square without delay.

Since the National Bus Pass was issued in April, it has still been possible to use the old passes locally until the end of September. From 1st October, old passes are no longer valid.

Public Transport in Bishopthorpe

Bishopthorpe has a useful bus service to the Centre of York (First York Route 11). Service frequency is half-hourly during the day, and hourly evenings and Sundays. (There is no evening service on Sundays.) The route through Bishopthorpe is circular, and stops are clearly marked. In York, the service calls at The Stonebow, Ousegate, Rougier Street and York Station. The other service through Bishopthorpe (Harrogate Travel Route C1) is from Askham Bar to Tadcaster via various villages. The timetable is rather complicated, and service intervals vary, so reference to a full timetable (see Information Page) is necessary. Services finish early evening, and there is no service on Sundays. This bus is useful for shopping at Tesco (Askham Bar), for transfer at Askham Bar to Park & Ride and Yorkshire Coastliner buses and for York College. As well as savouring the delights of Tadcaster, one can change in that town to buses for Leeds (Coastliner), Pontefract (Arriva), and Wetherby/Otley (Utopia - infrequent service by bus as in life).

European Health Insurance

From January 1st 2006, travellers within the EC (and Switzerland) will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You can apply for this online here or by phoning 0845 606 2030. It is also advisable to buy private insurance. The EHIC covers basic health care but does not, of course, cover cancellation, loss of baggage, repatriation, etc. Some private insurance policies require the EHIC to be used for basic treatment.
