From January 1st 2006, travellers within the EC (and Switzerland) will need a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You can apply for this online here or by phoning 0845 606 2030. It is also advisable to buy private insurance. The EHIC covers basic health care but does not, of course, cover cancellation, loss of baggage, repatriation, etc. Some private insurance policies require the EHIC to be used for basic treatment.
