first_responders_cardsciaed.jpgCommunity first responders are now playing a vital role in the emergency medical care provided to Bishopthorpe. We are just ordinary members of the public who have been trained by the ambulance service to deliver life-saving skills like resuscitation, giving oxygen and using a defibrillator as well as just making someone comfortable until the ambulance arrives.  We can arrive at an emergency scene in a matter of minutes, as we are sent to calls in our own village.
We have a dedicated and friendly team who are committed to making a difference to the local community.

Bishopthorpe First Responders are actively recruiting; if you are working full-time, retired or in-between and  you are interested in learning more about becoming a community first responder, please contact us on 01904 706160 or email june.whittaker@bishopthorpe.net

Look Out - Thieves About!

Many of you reading this article may be aware that Brunswick Organic Nursery, which is based on Appleton Road Bishopthorpe, runs a social enterprise supporting people with learning difficulty to produce and sell organic fruit and vegetables, plants and crafts as well a wide range of other items. Brunswick also leases the Archbishops Walled Garden (opposite the Palace), which over the last few years we have partially restored.  Unfortunately, several times this year the Walled Garden has been subject to either vandalism or break-ins.
Twice it appears that the damage is purely vandalism caused by teenagers causing havoc, which is not only upsetting and frustrating, but also draws upon our limited funds to put right.
However we have also been the target of well-equipped and well-organised gangs. Once the intruders damaged the property by stealing the lead from the roof; they caused thousands of pounds of damage to the pan-tile roof for the sake of few hundred pounds worth of lead. This has now been replaced with a lead-substitute for which we got special permission from the conservation department at City of York Council.   The next time thieves stole gardening machinery including lawn mowers and strimmers from a secure container.  We have heeded professional advice from our local police and also strengthened our security in the Walled Garden area and the storage buildings.  Unfortunately, we were targeted once again on the weekend of Friday 3rd September; the thieves have emptied a secure container full of the new replacement equipment such as mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters etc.  The intruders must have had transport to escape with the equipment. Of course now we are no longer able to store this sort of kit at the walled garden which is very aggravating.

These sorts of thefts are not limited to us, we have heard of several stories from around the village. It is hard to bear, partly because it is costly and like any charity we always want to put our money to the best possible use. It also is very saddening and frustrating for us all, including the workers with learning difficulties, when our hard work and commitment to build the project is thwarted in this way.

You can help. Even though we no-longer will be able to store valuable items at the gardens we know it is only a matter of time before some bored teenagers or well organised gang is back, breaking what we have built up so painstakingly. We are asking people to be aware of the vulnerability of the walled gardens  and if anyone has any information or does see any thing suspicious to contact us either on 701869 or 707647 (evenings).

The entrance/exit to the Walled Garden is quite secluded but if anyone notices activity (especially in the evenings) please do ring us. We would prefer a few false alarms to missing that vital call that would allow us, or the police, to stop this from happening.

Thriller at The Ebor

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for EPers 2010.JPGFollowing last years heavy defeat the Parish Council were out for revenge in the second annual darts match with the Ebor Players as 'sporting' rivalry resumed for 2010.

First match up was the ladies doubles which after a closely fought match was narrowly edged by the Ebor Players represented by Diane Curran who finished with a three dart check out & her daughter Jo against Jo Bewley & Cayley Godfrey. Bewley being very unlucky with her final dart bouncing out of the 5 needed to win.

The next match, the mens doubles was a much more one sided affair with Tom Davis & newcomer Paddy Thornton always having the better of Tim Bruce and gender bender Christine Higgins, a 'man' for the night due to a shortage of the latter on the Ebor Players team. Honours even 1.1

Next up was mixed doubles with the Ebor Players represented as last year by David 'the steelman' Rose and Bev Linfoot. They continued their winning ways and narrowly edged a close contest with Stewart Harrison & Catherine Bruce.

Now we were into the singles with Lisa Thornton (Parish Council) and Julia Sykes (Ebor Players) both coming into this match with unbeaten records, something would have to give and it was Thornton who emerged victorious to make the overall match score even again at 2.2

Men's singles newcomer Steve 'the boatman' Poulter easily defeated Andrew 'the scientist Dunn meaning that Ian Jemison from the Parish Council had to defeat Ebor Players captain Liam Godfrey to keep the match alive. Jemison duly obliged leaving Godfrey with a 0-2 record, his place must be in jeopardy for next year.

So with the scores tied at 3.3 the decider was a mixed doubles between Poulter & Diane Curran & Sandra MacDonald & Chris Dale for the Parish Council. The match ebbed and flowed in true tie-breaker fashion until finally 'the boatman' prevailed to claim his second victory of the evening.

Victory for the Ebor Players by the narrowest of margins by 4 matches to 3.

Thanks must go to Ros Kerr for donating a trophy and getting it engraved, to the Ebor Inn for their hospitality and to all who agreed to take part from the Parish Council & Ebor Players

St Clements Hall

St Clements Hall in Cygnet Street has been in a sorry state for many years, but thanks to a lot of hard work and the determination of a small group of people the Hall has been extensively restored, and is on track to re-open this Spring.

Originally built by public subscription, Clements Hall aims to bring people together and to support and create community activities, which will provide resource, inspiration and entertainment.

The Trustees recognise the historic significance of the site and bring to the project a desire to improve the quality of life particularly for local people by being a catalyst and a vehicle for wide variety of opportunities across all ages, backgrounds and interests in the local and wider community.

The Hall is now available for bookings, so take a look at the Hall's own website at www.clementshall.org.uk for more details.

On Sunday 4th October Brunswick Organic Nursery is holding a sponsored bike ride and walk in support of the Lord Mayor's Charities. The charities this year have been chosen by John Galvin, our Bishopthorpe-based Lord Mayor, and are York Against Cancer together with Brunswick Nursery itself, which provides craftwork and horticultural opportunities for people with special needs.

The event starts at 11am from Brunswick nursery, and the route takes you along the cycle path for 6 or 12 miles (or less if you prefer!)

The 12 mile route takes you to Riccall and back, while on the 6 mile route you turn back at a refreshment point at the 3 mile mark.

Finish is back at the nursery, and everyone should be back no later than 4pm.

The Greyhound in Riccall is providing sandwiches at £2 per person, and tea and soft drinks will also be available. There will be light refreshments at the 3 mile point too.

You can download a registration form here, or get more details by dropping in at the nursery or giving them a call on 01904 701869.

If you don't feel up to all this activity, don't forget you can sponsor someone else to do it!
