First match up was the ladies doubles which after a closely fought match was narrowly edged by the Ebor Players represented by Diane Curran who finished with a three dart check out & her daughter Jo against Jo Bewley & Cayley Godfrey. Bewley being very unlucky with her final dart bouncing out of the 5 needed to win.

The next match, the mens doubles was a much more one sided affair with Tom Davis & newcomer Paddy Thornton always having the better of Tim Bruce and gender bender Christine Higgins, a 'man' for the night due to a shortage of the latter on the Ebor Players team. Honours even 1.1

Next up was mixed doubles with the Ebor Players represented as last year by David 'the steelman' Rose and Bev Linfoot. They continued their winning ways and narrowly edged a close contest with Stewart Harrison & Catherine Bruce.

Now we were into the singles with Lisa Thornton (Parish Council) and Julia Sykes (Ebor Players) both coming into this match with unbeaten records, something would have to give and it was Thornton who emerged victorious to make the overall match score even again at 2.2

Men's singles newcomer Steve 'the boatman' Poulter easily defeated Andrew 'the scientist Dunn meaning that Ian Jemison from the Parish Council had to defeat Ebor Players captain Liam Godfrey to keep the match alive. Jemison duly obliged leaving Godfrey with a 0-2 record, his place must be in jeopardy for next year.

So with the scores tied at 3.3 the decider was a mixed doubles between Poulter & Diane Curran & Sandra MacDonald & Chris Dale for the Parish Council. The match ebbed and flowed in true tie-breaker fashion until finally 'the boatman' prevailed to claim his second victory of the evening.

St Clements Hall in Cygnet Street has been in a sorry state for many years, but thanks to a lot of hard work and the determination of a small group of people the Hall has been extensively restored, and is on track to re-open this Spring.

Originally built by public subscription, Clements Hall aims to bring people together and to support and create community activities, which will provide resource, inspiration and entertainment.

The Trustees recognise the historic significance of the site and bring to the project a desire to improve the quality of life particularly for local people by being a catalyst and a vehicle for wide variety of opportunities across all ages, backgrounds and interests in the local and wider community.

The Hall is now available for bookings, so take a look at the Hall's own website at www.clementshall.org.uk for more details.

There is a meeting in Bishopthorpe on Tuesday March 2nd 2010 in the Village Hall from 7.00pm. This is a residents meeting to raise concerns with our local Police team.

I have seen little evidence of the Police recently around Bishopthorpe apart from last weekend. Has anybody else seen any Police activity recently? Are we not better seeing the Police 'little but often' rather than 'after the horse has bolted'?

Victor has e-mailed bishopthorpe.net with some thoughts on the Palace fence...

"Struck me how quickly the new fencing was going up around the Palace, and how well it looked, and then it stopped; the reason being someone from the village has complained about the road being blocked... This is after all the upset we had over the years from the new drainage, and recently the water works. Why have these people to be so petty, the thing would be done now and end of story, instead Dr Sentamu has stopped it so has not to upset the village !!!!! I give in."

Incidentally, if you want to make a comment about something that's not one of the main news and views entries, there's now a new topic called 'Village Voice'. Just go to this topic and choose the 'Leave a Comment' option. You can then write your message and it'll be published under this heading.

        The City of York Council has distributed questionnaires about a scheme to "improve" Blossom Street.

As is usual, only one questionnaire has been sent to each household, so about half York's population is disenfranchised.

Anyway, if your partner allows you the opportunity to express an opinion, you should consider whether the alternatives proposed really provide value for money at a time when we can't afford toclear footpaths and protect old people from snow and ice.

It is trendy to appear to provide facilities for cyclists. The alternative and expensive schemes propose the usual dangerous expedient of narrowing the carriageway and providing hazardous, narrow, unprotected marked strips in which cyclists ride at their peril. Even more dangerous is the suggestion of such a strip unprotected between two vehicle lanes.

One effect of these "improvements" would be to extend the traffic-light stop times for vehicles. Given the large number of bus passengers who would thus be delayed compared with the very small number of cyclists who use the street, I believe that money is being wasted to fulfil silly statistical targets rather than for real public benefit.

What is really needed on Blossom Street in my view is:

1. A pedestrian-crossing for the benefit in particular of children from All Souls School;

2. Abandonment of the (probably costly) experiment with Purple-People-Eater buses, vehicles which self-evidently are unsuited to York's narrow streets and which frequently delay traffic because they have to start from the outer lane and cross the inner lane to get round left-hand bends;

3. A ban on loading/unloading at Blossom Street premises between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

This is obviously a personal view, and in no way reflects any policy of the bishopthorpe.net website.

What do you think?

Please complete and return the questionnaire. Comments here would also be welcome.

Ian Hodson

Strolling through Bishopthorpe is hard going on the slippery footpaths but, with perseverance and camera in hand, the winter sun brings its own rewards.

Midnight Mass has been celebrated in this church since it was built and consecrated in 1899.
