'Flippin Burgers'

Did anybody notice today the man opposite the marcia cooking burgers? He had a trailer attached to a white van. Was he cooking them to sell in Bishopthorpe or was he cooking them to take to the races? Did anybody in Bishopthorpe buy a burger from him?

I was advised not to take a picture but there are obvious questions here, apart from what a great idea....

1. Did he have a licence? Did he need one?

2. If he was selling them, is this fair on our local businesses?

3. Can we stop this happening again if we need to?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I understand that it will be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting. Watch this space!

Following further discussion it would appear that one or two other "Burgher Vans" were operating on the Race Days in the area last week. For the next meeting in July, staff from licensing will be attending the area.

If any "Burgher Vans" are seen operating in the area details will be taken and hopefully prosecutions will follow.

I have taken this up with the appropriate Council Department, and they confirm that if this trader was on public property he would definitely need a license (private property is another matter). I understand no license was applied for.

It would appear that this person has been reported, with a full description of the vehicle along with a vehicle registration number, and the matter is being investigated further. I will post further information as it becomes available.

For future reference, anyone who observes a street trader whom they suspect is unlicensed can report this to Licensing Enforcement Officer Nigel Woodhead at 552520, and it will be looked into.
