Feeling Lister-less!

As Phil says in his report, it is sad that we shall no longer see Evelyn and Andrew when we go to collect our newspapers.

As well as the pleasant welcome we always found in their well-stocked shop, we have cause to be grateful for other contributions which they made to village life, and particularly to the development of some of our young people. Youngsters delivering papers were taught one of the basics of adult employment - a responsible and disciplined attitude to work. Several of them moved on to more responsible tasks, serving in the shop, relating pleasantly to customers, administering accounts and handling  quite large sums of  cash. They will have cause to be grateful later in life for this experience.

As an employer of local young people, Andrew took part in the planning of the Village Youth Award Scheme. This led later to his being invited to join the working party which planned the Sensory Garden . His contribution to both schemes was practical and welcome. At a later stage, he arranged for the locking and unlocking of the Garden in the early months of its existence, a thankless task which was undertaken in his usual quiet and unassuming way.

We wish Andrew and Evelyn a long, healthy, happy and well-deserved retirement.

SHOCK...HORROR !!

I arrived home this evening to read this delivered note regarding Listers Newsagents. Did anybody know this was happening...will I still be able to say hello to Evelyn and Andrew in the village??

I am sure that Maynews will be a great asset to Bishopthorpe but is there something organised to say goodbye and thank you to Mr and Mrs Lister?

I for one will miss them.

Phil
