About the Group

Our aim is to research, record and preserve the history of Bishopthorpe and, where possible, publish the results.

The Group was formed in 1998 as a result of the many activities occurring in the village prompted by the Millennium.  We produced a successful book - Bishopthorpe, Reaping the Past - and we haven't looked back since.

We have always been a working group carrying out research, recording interviews with older residents, transcribing documents and collecting and caring for a local archive.  For our latest project, we have produced a give-away History Trail.

We meet to discuss our projects about every 6 weeks at Vernon House, Maple Avenue, Bishopthorpe.

In May 2008, we held our first Open Meeting with a guest speaker.  We hope that this will be the first of many such meetings.  Membership is open to anyone who shares an interest in the history of the village.  The annual membership fee is £7.50.

Forthcoming meetings

Thursday:

17 July, 28 August, 9 October, 20 November, 15 January 2009 (AGM)
