About the Group

Our aim is to research, record and preserve the history of Bishopthorpe and, where possible, publish the results.

The Group was formed in 1998 as a result of the many activities occurring in the village which were prompted by the Millennium.  We produced a successful book - Bishopthorpe, Reaping the Past - and we haven't looked back since.

We are a working group and carry out a number of projects including, recording interviews with older residents, transcribing documents and collecting and caring for a local archive. Members also carry out research projects on an individual basis.

Last year we produced a successful village History Trail.

The Group meets every 6 weeks at Vernon House, Maple Avenue, Bishopthorpe.

Membership is open to anyone who shares an interest in the history of the village.  Open meetings to which a guest speaker is invited are held about every six months at the Methodist Church Hall, Copmanthorpe Lane.  These are advertised in Link, by poster, and through this website.

The annual membership fee is £7.50.
