Bishopthorpe@Crossroads project - what is it?
The project began at an ideas day held in 2002, and last year was awarded a start-up grant of £1000 by the CYC Ward Committee. Local people had already identified that they would like to see parts of the village improved and better cared for.
Most people we have asked agree the area around the Pinfold and the junction of Main Street and Sim Balk Lane needs improving. Haphazard developments - in the Conservation Area - have made it unsightly - and some people think that a well designed 'village centre' would provide something for residents and visitors to take pride in. A vision of what the village centre might look like will mean that as funding becomes available, new and improved features can be installed. These might be better signs, planting, improved pedestrian access, seating, information for visitors - whatever people think will work!
There are all sorts of issues that might be dealt with. If you have an opinion, or can think of problems that you face as a walker, driver, cyclist, resident or visitor, you can comment to any of the articles on this web site.
The scheme is being underwritten in its first phases by the Bishopthorpe Millennium Trust, and is supported by the Parish Council. A small goup of local people have formed a team to get things going, and they have organised a number of steps. You can see who is involved here.
A Street Audit was carried out on 11th September 2004.
There was a display in the library in September 2004.
There was a questionnaire sent to every household, also in September.
A report of this consultation can be downloaded on this page.
A competition was then run for design ideas in winter 2004-5, and the prize of £1500 shared by three winners. An outline of their best ideas was shown in the Library in June 2005.
It is expected to make a start on detailed designs and implementation of one aspect of the scheme very soon.
