Sports Report

Bishopthorpe dot net breaks new ground today with the launch of a section devoted to local sports clubs and associations.

The new Sport category in the top menu takes you to the sports home page, and from there you can access pages for each of the sports clubs that are taking part.

The cricket club is the first of our clubs to have its own section, and we hope that other clubs will soon follow on.

Milestone for Nature Notes

The Nature Notes section clocked up its 1,000th visitor this weekend; no prizes I'm afraid but well done to Tony for all his entries. Lots of people in the village are regular viewers of the Nature Notes and it's a great asset to the bishopthorpe dot net web site.

Welcome to the Gallery

A new area of the website has just been launched - The Gallery.

This is the place for you to show off any of those photos that you're particularly pleased with, or that might be interesting for others in the village to see.

The editor of this section is Graham, and he'll be taking a look at the entries and making his choice for publication - just in case we're overwhelmed with the response and can't show everything!

New Nature Section

We've managed to recruit Tony Barton as our resident wildlife correspondent, and he's kicked things off with his diary entries of the changing aspects of nature as the year progresses. Take a look at the new pages to see how it works.

Martin Dudley

Martin and Carol Dudley have left Bishopthorpe to move to Sheffield for family reasons.

Martin first became involved in Bishopthorpe village activities when he took part in the Pageant in 2000, and I and others got to know him through that.

When the Millennium celebrations ended, Martin was invited to lead the discussion at a village meeting on how the village's Millennium Fund profits should be spent. From the ideas he collected, the decision to found the Bishopthorpe Millennium Trust evolved, as did schemes for the Youth Award Scheme, village boundary signs, and improvement to land at the Main Street/Sim Balk Lane junction.

The Trust followed a policy of applying for outside funding wherever possible, using our own money as seeding. This resulted over the years in grants of approximately three times the original sum coming to the village, either indirectly via the Trust, or directly to local organisations. Public support was essential to such applications, and Martin's expertise in obtaining this through public meetings and surveys was essential to the process.

The biggest project the Trust undertook was the Crossroads scheme. Martin led this work. He stimulated public support He understood the need to employ professional designers to produce outline plans. He recruited, organised and led the volunteers who created the Sensory Garden - an aesthetic improvement to a previously nondescript site and an amenity increasingly appreciated by both residents and visitors. He worked, too, in support of the Pinfold construction, and had hoped to see the completion of the Crossroads vision. It is one of his regrets, on leaving the village, that the Millennium Funds are now exhausted, and that the Parish Council which took over the scheme has decided that at present it cannot be taken further.

Martin's work on this website has been mentioned by others. Suffice it for me to add that but for Martin's enthusiasm, expertise and hard work, the site would have expired years ago.

Martin has been an enthusiastic participant in other village activities, including the Petanque Club and the Camera Club. He was never satisfied to sit back and let others do the work.

Bishopthorpe is a pleasant place in which to live but circumstances change and if the community vegetates the quality of all our lives will deteriorate. People like Martin are needed to move us forward, and whether we realise it or not, we are indebted to them.

We are sad to have lost Martin & Carol and we wish them well in their new location. How soon shall we be looking at www.DoreandTotley.net? Stop slacking and get on with it, Dudley!

Team Changes

Regular users of Bishopthorpe dot net will know how much time and effort Martin has spent setting up, managing, and promoting the site over the last few years, especially during the recent upgrades.

Unfortunately Martin is leaving us for pastures new so is bowing out gracefully from site management duties and hanging up his keyboard. However one of his last actions was to find a willing/gullible 'volunteer' to carry on the good work - which is where I come in.

At the moment I'm just trying to find my way around and see how things work. I'll try not to mess anything up until I know what I'm doing - and that could take some time!

In the meantime feel free to post any comments, observations, ideas, etc about anything to do with the site. I can't guarantee anything will get done, but every bit of feedback helps.

Mail problems

Bish dot net email was not working properly yesterday as the mail server had been compromised by hackers and was sending spam. This meant that it was blacklisted worldwide, buy after a report to the server support team this should now be resolved.

Transport pages

Now called Local Travel they are located at http://www.bishopthorpe.net/mt/travel/ - please amend any of your bookmarks.

As before they provide travel information links and news and views about local transport issues.

Annual use

Today 1st January 2009 (Twenty-o-nine) the Bishopthorpe web site recorded over 17 870 visitors, and increase of 7870 over the year. With new and expanded sections - on local history and a blog written by our local city councillor - its pages and layout have been revamped several times in the year. The site offers plenty of news of local interest, and is open to all.
